Lessons Learned

I run my own small business and I think the devotional this week where we learned about different business grades hit me hard. In the wintertime I sell hot chocolate from my hot dog cart and people often ask me about coffee and I’ve been tempted but always joked that I wouldn’t even know what makes a good cup of coffee. This devotional solidified my faith in not selling coffee. Not only would I probably sell a terrible product but would sacrifice a piece of my faith for profit. 


Another thing That was good for me to learn this week was the ingredients for success. I struggle with waking up early and after watching this video, I feel more recommitted to getting up and starting the day outright.

Lessons Learned President Monson’s talk regarding gratitude was really important to me because I think having an attitude of gratitude is a great way to remove your problems from your life. If we think about the people he outlined being grateful for like mothers, fathers and teachers then we can also think about how they would look at us, and hopefully, we are acting in a way that they wouldn’t be disappointed in us. The things we are usually grateful for came at a sacrifice to them so to honor their sacrifice, we can live our best lives. I can't imagine how challenging it was to balance his family life and run a business that essentially nurtures young businesses into hopeful successful models like Yahoo or AOL. Week #12

Week # 12 Based on what you read in the first two pages (pages 3 and 4), why are virtue and integrity so vital to an economy? In the example of the stock market, we trust there is no inside trading or other shady activity going on in the organizations we are investing in. These companies also have a duty to run their businesses honestly because people depend on their success. We can't have an economy built on lies. According to Charles Handy, what is the “real justification” for the existence of businesses? To make a profit so the business can do something more or better What are two solutions proposed by Handy that you agree with? Why? Measuring success on outcomes for others. I think as a business you really should always be thinking about how what you do impacts the customer. When you stop doing that, you stop innovation and if all you focused on is money then you'll lose sight of what makes you relevant in the market. I like the idea of sharing dividends with employees. Week #5

  Week #5 Lessons Learned Elder Faust’s talk about perseverance was inspiring for me this week because It caused me to reflect more on my mission. As I think about the skills I acquired while serving I think about the time management skills and people skills and especially the interpersonal skills I had to acquire while living with someone 24/7! Elder Faust pointed out that the skills we learned will help us persevere throughout our lives and he was spot on!  Another thing I learned was about finding our passion. I like the idea of having a “portfolio” of passions and using that as your foundation since the road is easier to traverse when you have more options to sift through.
